400 Days of My World of Interiors

An Anniversary Letter from the Editor

Dear Readers,

Today marks 400 consecutive days of publishing on My World of Interiors. Four hundred days of ideas, discoveries, arguments, enthusiasms and occasional indignation. Not a single day missed. What began as a personal exploration of the things I love has gradually evolved into something rather more ambitious: a daily publication devoted to culture, aesthetics, intellectual curiosity and the endlessly fascinating business of being human.

The title, My World of Interiors, has always meant more to me than rooms and decoration. Interiors are also the landscapes of the mind: the books we read, the music we return to, the films that shape our understanding of the world, the buildings we inhabit and the philosophical questions that accompany us through life. Design remains central, but it exists here in conversation with history, literature, politics, art and society. I have never believed that culture should be divided into neat, self-contained compartments.

Over these 400 days, we have travelled considerable intellectual and geographical distances. From the moral complexities of Dostoevsky and the quiet humanity of Chekhov to the extraordinary musical intelligence of Sarah Vaughan; from the revolutionary elegance of Issey Miyake to the political imagination of Malcolm X. We have considered Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as a parable of modern capitalism, explored extraordinary architecture, discovered remarkable places to stay and examined the shifting relationships between generations, fashion and identity.

Some subjects have been celebratory, others deliberately uncomfortable. Both belong here. I believe that a cultural publication should do more than admire beautiful things. It should question prevailing assumptions, revisit neglected histories, challenge conventional wisdom and occasionally risk being unpopular. Beauty and social significance are not competing interests; very often, they illuminate one another.

The introduction of a weekly editorial rhythm has given this rather expansive universe a clearer structure. Music on Mondays, design on Tuesdays, writers on Wednesdays, film on Thursdays, travel on Fridays, art on Saturdays and philosophy on Sundays. Alongside these regular features, there is still room for personal musings, unexpected discoveries and the occasional detour. Curiosity, after all, rarely respects a timetable.

Publishing every day has also reminded me that writing is fundamentally an exercise in attention. There is always another artist to discover, another historical assumption worth examining, another extraordinary interior, another book demanding a second reading. The difficulty has never been finding something to write about. It has been choosing among the possibilities.

Most importantly, I want to thank those of you who have accompanied me, whether you have been here since the beginning or arrived yesterday. Every reader, thoughtful comment, shared article and conversation contributes to the life of this publication. In an increasingly hurried digital culture, the willingness to spend time with a long essay feels particularly meaningful.

Four hundred days is a milestone, but it is not a conclusion. There are still countless subjects I want to explore, places I want to take you and conversations I hope to begin.

Here is to the next 400 days of curiosity, beauty, intellectual independence and the pleasure of discovering something new.

Thank you for reading.

With affection,

Birgitte
