Rob Reiner, the acclaimed American actor, director, producer and writer whose work helped shape modern film and television, has died alongside his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. The couple were found dead at their Los Angeles home on December 14, 2025. Authorities have said the circumstances are being investigated as a possible homicide. Reiner was 78; his wife was 68.

Reiner first became a household name as Mike “Meathead” Stivic on the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family, a role that earned him multiple Emmy Awards and placed him at the centre of one of the most culturally influential television programmes of the 1970s. He later built an extraordinary second career behind the camera, directing a series of films that have endured as modern classics.
His directing work ranged effortlessly across genres, including the mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap (1984), the coming-of-age drama Stand by Me (1986), the fantasy romance The Princess Bride (1987), the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally… (1989), the psychological thriller Misery (1990), and the courtroom drama A Few Good Men (1992). Together, these films established Reiner as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and human-centred storytellers.
Born in New York City on March 6, 1947, Reiner was the son of the legendary comedian and writer Carl Reiner. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he earned widespread admiration for work that combined wit, emotional intelligence and moral clarity. In addition to his creative achievements, he was a prominent political activist and philanthropist, known for his outspoken advocacy on civil rights, democracy and early childhood education.
Michele Singer Reiner was a photographer and creative partner, admired for her artistic sensibility and her quiet influence on Reiner’s work and life. Married since 1989, the couple were widely regarded as deeply devoted to one another and to their family.
